Frequently Asked Questions

How many processing nodes can SquidNet Deluxe support? SquidNet Deluxe (free download) supports a maximum of 2 concurrent nodes processing any job at the same time. So, for example, even though you have 5 nodes with SquidNet Deluxe installed, only two of these nodes will ever be working on any job at the same time.
What is a Tipnode? A Tipnode can be either a node that submits job requests on behalf of the user or one that processes network job requests. The node can be configured as either. If you wish that a particular node not be involved in any network process task either place it in its own network pool or "deactivate" it from the Tipnodes List View.
Why does each Tipnode need Administrative privileges to operate? Since most applications require some type of administrative privileges to operate normally, it is more feasible to have one main account with full permissions than to have one separate account for each supported application. CAUTION: Since the Tipnode account does have full admin rights, please ensure that this account information is as secure as possible.
What TCP/UDP ports are used by the Tipnode services and daemons? Windows and Linux Tipnode services use TCP port 17394 and UDP port 17395. Please make sure that these ports are "open" in your firewall configuration. Not doing so, will cause tipnode detection problems.
How do tipnodes find each other on the network? All tipnodes periodically send out heartbeat messages in the form of UDP broadcast network packets. Each tipnode also "listens" on the network for update information from new or existing tipnodes and updates its local database accordingly.
How many tipnodes can the system handle? In theory, there's no limit to the number of tipnodes that can be on the system. The only limitation is the network itself. For large networks, the SMC console node is typically the main "hub" for the network and usually has 2 or more network interfaces (subnets) connected to it to provide connectivity support for hundreds or thousands of tipnodes.
